Uncle Sam's Bitcoin Stash: Inside America's Strategic Reserve and the Push to Buy a Million More

markets2026-08-26 · 3 min read · 0 reads

The US government has quietly become one of the largest Bitcoin holders on Earth , and has vowed never to sell. Now some in Washington want it to buy a million coins more.

For most of Bitcoin's existence, governments treated it with suspicion, something to be regulated, taxed or occasionally seized from criminals. The idea that a nation might one day deliberately stockpile the cryptocurrency as a treasured national asset seemed far-fetched. Yet that is exactly what has quietly happened in the United States.

A national reserve of digital gold

The centrepiece of this shift is the creation of a formal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, established to hold government-owned Bitcoin as a long-term reserve asset, much as nations have traditionally held gold. It marks a profound change in how the state views a technology it once regarded with deep unease.

The scale of the holding is genuinely striking. The US government is estimated to control several hundred thousand Bitcoin, a hoard worth many billions of dollars and representing a meaningful slice of all the coins that will ever exist, making it one of the single largest holders on the planet.

Much of this Bitcoin was not bought but acquired over the years through law enforcement seizures from criminal cases. The pivotal decision was to stop selling these coins, as had been the previous practice, and instead centralise them into a single reserve to be held rather than liquidated.

The vow never to sell

That commitment to hold rather than sell is arguably the most consequential part of the policy. For years, whenever the government auctioned off seized Bitcoin, it removed a source of potential supply from the market in a haphazard way. Pledging to keep the coins fundamentally changes that dynamic.

By declaring that these reserves will not be sold, the state has effectively taken a huge quantity of Bitcoin off the table permanently. Supporters argue this signals a long-term belief in the asset's value and removes an overhang that once weighed on the minds of investors.

It also carries powerful symbolic weight. When the government of the world's largest economy chooses to hold Bitcoin as a strategic asset rather than dispose of it, it lends the cryptocurrency a stamp of legitimacy that no amount of marketing from the industry itself could ever buy.

The push to buy a million coins

For some in Washington, however, simply holding what has been seized is not ambitious enough. Proposed legislation would go much further, directing the Treasury to actively purchase Bitcoin on a massive scale, with the goal of accumulating around a million coins over a number of years and holding them for decades.

Such a move would be extraordinary. It would transform the government from a passive holder of confiscated assets into an active, deliberate buyer of Bitcoin on the open market, injecting enormous new demand into a market where the total supply is strictly and permanently limited.

The potential price implications are obvious. If one of the world's biggest buyers began steadily hoovering up hundreds of thousands of coins, the effect on a fixed-supply asset could be dramatic, a prospect that thrills Bitcoin advocates and worries sceptics in equal measure.

A gamble with big stakes

None of this is without serious controversy. Critics question whether taxpayer money should be spent accumulating a famously volatile asset, warning that a sharp fall in the price could saddle the public with heavy losses and leave officials exposed to accusations of reckless speculation.

Supporters counter that Bitcoin's fixed supply makes it a potential hedge against the erosion of traditional currencies over time, and that a nation ignoring it risks being left behind as digital assets grow in importance across the global financial system in the decades ahead.

Whatever one makes of the wisdom of the strategy, its significance is undeniable. A technology born on the fringes of finance now sits inside the reserves of a superpower, and the choices made about that stash in the coming years could shape the future of money far beyond the borders of any single country.
